We Are the Goldens by Dana Reinhardt
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was not a book I expected to like but surprisingly did. This is a tale between two sisters, close in age, going through the complications of being teenagers and the social pressures that happen at this age. I find that knowing who you are and who you want to be can be a difficult thing to balance and figure out and this story delves into this world.
My only gripe is the way the story is told. Nell, the younger sister, is basically writing to her older sister Layla, and sometimes it gets a bit confusing as to who Nell is talking about or where her mind wanders too.
The flow of the story goes to Nell being concerned about her older sister and notices these changes. When she finds out the reason for it, she is conflicted and is not sure what to do. She tries to figure out her own life and problems, but it is hard for her to do so and turns to her older sister, but her older sister is ... distracted. Layla begins to not be 'herself' and freaks out and becomes a totally different person, even lying and making up things to control her situation. The position she is in is not the norm or fair to her, and we as readers get to see into the mind of how teenagers can react. And this type of secret is just too much for her Nell to handle.
The ending left me wanting more though! Despite the direction it was going in--Nell sitting down with her family saying she has something to say--we think she is about to expose her sister's secret. But it isn't for sure, because she could change her mind! Or, even if she does reveal her secret, we don't get to see Layla's reaction or the consequences of the secret revealed!
Ultimately, this is a fast reading book that goes through the mind of a young freshman in high school and how she handles and deals with her family, friends and peers as a teenager. It would be great to see a sequel or some sort of short story on the outcome of Layla's situation, but who knows!
